Seun Kuti Worries About Artistes Using His Late Father, Fela As Excuse To Smoke

Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, son of late Nigerian music legend, Fela Kuti, is worried that a lot of contemporary artistes hide under the notion of being inspired by his father to pursue personal interests.

Seun made this known in a recent Instagram Live session with Nigerian music executive, Ubi Franklin.

During the interview, he said such artistes often hide under that notion to smoke and chase women.

The 37-year-old also noted that majority of those who make such claims are from religious homes but they use his father as a form of “escapism”.

In his words, “I think a lot of them grow up in Christian and Muslim homes but use Fela as an excuse to smoke and chase girls.”

“And also using Fela as a reason to be reckless and rude to your elders. They are not really rude to the authorities”.

Even in death, Fela has continued to be a focal point in music related discussions in the country.

Fela is often seen as a yardstick for comparison with contemporary Afrobeat singers.

It should be recalled that in February, Burna Boy caused a stir on social media after he claimed to be the best in the country’s music industry since Fela.
